Magazine Cover Conventions Reflection

Learning of magazine conventions

We learned about magazine conventions in class. We went over different things like the Masthead, Cover image, and Cover line. This provided a basis for how our magazine should look like. It also allowed us everything that is needed for a successful magazine cover, allowing for the inclusion of these conventions in our own.

Genre

My Genre choice came directly from my photo. This is a photo I had taken during curriculum night at my school and we ended up using this photo in the yearbook and while I was looking for a picture to use, I thought might as well pick a good one i've take. Because of the nature of the photo, I chose to make it a music magazine. My cover conveys that theme because the Masthead as well as other words play into the whole music theme.

Magazine conventions

The conventions I used were my masthead, banner, PUFF, and coverlines. My masthead is is the main text on my cover page as well as the title of my magazine. I chose "SoundWave" which plays into the picture being band and related to music.
The banner, PUFF, and coverlines all contributed to my magazine cover with the text it included. I used the shaping tools to make the circles, squares, and rectangles. All of the conventions I used were filled with text that related to the genre of my magazine, music. I also added lines thought the cover to go with the masthead of SoundWave. These conventions give the reader insight into what the magazine has to share.

Challenges and success

The most challenging part of creating this magazine was getting used to the new platform. Ive worked with digital design but I usually use eDesign and Canva to create my designs, so learning to use indesign was very new to me. Unlike for premiere pro, we didn't have step by step tutorial videos to follow to learn how to use the platform but we were given short video tutorials from former AICE Media students. After I learned how to use the platform it became easy to design it how I wanted. The really successful part was choosing the picture and genre. I knew that I had a good selection of pictures Ive taken and once I saw that we could make the genre about music, I knew exactly what picture I wanted to use

Important takeaways

What I will be taking away is to further learn how to use indesign to be able to make the best magazine I possibly can when the time comes. I learned a lot about the platform but I know there is more that I don't know and stuff I can learn to make it easier to use.

I think this will help my portfolio project by showing me what I have to know and tools that i'm going to have to use when it comes time to make my magazine. It also showed me how time consuming it could be if you are unsure of what you are doing on this platform. I now know that I should do a little more research on indesign as well as prepare the vision I have for my magazine.
